Phencyclidine is a member of the class of piperidines that is piperidine in which the nitrogen is substituted with a 1-phenylcyclohexyl group. Formerly used as an anaesthetic agent, it exhibits both hallucinogenic and neurotoxic effects. It has a role as a psychotropic drug, an anaesthetic, a neurotoxin and a NMDA receptor antagonist. It is a member of benzenes and a member of piperidines. It derives from a hydride of a piperidine.
